HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
Humble Beginnings refers to a mix of common, aromatic vegetables that almost every cuisine in the world uses as a base for recipes. The mix creates a depth of flavor and complexity that defines the particular food. These ”beginnings” sometimes differ and may have additional ingredients due to family tradition, taste preferences, and region. All drawings are colored pencil on paper.

RECIPES IN FABRIC
I discovered raw linen when I used it as a background for my 10 of Spades quilt made for Art Quilts: Playing With a Full Deck. Raw linen is not conducive to my favorite needdle-turn hand technique that stitches the shape in place with a running stitch. Because of the weight and stability of the linen, machine stitching became the technique of choice for the recipes.
With this background fabric and machine appliqué techniques in my tool box, I made “recipes” for the 4 seasons. Then out came the real foodie within me.
Along with a growing collection of favorite quotations grew a large collection of recipes starting sometime in the mid 70’s. Then in the early 90’s, I connected my love of appliqué with my recipe collection and started making the little recipe quilts. Arrangement of Mixed Greens with Edible Flowers and Raspberry Vinaigrette made it into Quilt National 2005. The video shows the series.
